Rowing matches are very popular in Yurihonjo City and this site is the center of water sports. It is a complex facility unique in Japan, consisted of a boat storage to store competition boats and canoes, a membership sports gym, “Museum of Water and River” where you can learn with fun the nature and history of the Koyoshigawa River and, a multiple-purpose hall good for a variety of events. This is one of the best spots in the country to practice rowing.
The history of rowing in the city is long and it goes back to Meiji Era. The then governor of Akita Prefecture who saw the Koyoshigawa River decided it would be perfect for rowing. He sent a boat to Honjo Prefectural High School (called Honjo Junior High School at that time), which was the beginning. Since then, Honjo High School has won 16 national championships at the rowing matches such as interscholastic athletic meets and national athletic meets.
